How much boost can a stock engine take

The engine I chose for this test was a motor we built for the Popular Hot Rod Engine Master Challenge. It is a 414 CID LS motor designed to run on 91 octane with power approaching 700 HP. When testing Race-Gas I was being careful watching the data stream for knocking. The biggest benefit of nitrous is that it provides enormous "bang for the buck." You can purchase a nitrous kit, brand new for around $500 with everything you really need to start using it, maybe as much as $700 if you get all the bells and whistles, and instantly strap on 15, 35, 55, 65, 75, 125 or even 150 horsepower. I do not consider the factory crank to be a weak point on an N/A build up. So I would have to say 350HP ball park should be considered a safe limit for the factory stock 4.7L internals. Is the question, how much boost can you safely run on the stock msm turbo? Or how much boost you can safely run on a stock engine with the msm turbo? Both are relative, but different. Our stock turbos are really only good for 12-14psi. I run mine at 12psi but it creeps a little bit to 13.5-14 on colder days since I don't have a ported wastegate ...The stock turbo can deliver around 1.7 to 2 bars of held boost. It doesn't take much to overfuel a stock naturally aspirated engine, often with disastrous results. Safety as always is important. On that note, probably the first thing one should do would be to disconnect the batteries, to ensure there is no power to the pump, or at least remove the wires so that if/when you rotate the engine, it will not start. that engine will take about 14 psi of boost maximum before you start running into problems, then the cost goes up incredibly after that. anything over 14 psi you will certainly have to have new injectors, a new ecu, new turbo, exhaust manifold, intercooler, wastegate, dump valve all up-sized to take the extra strain, let alone cam shaft, bottom end re-work, clutch, gearbox. Be cautious on who you have tune that motor, make sure they understand the difference between the timing of the OBD2 and OBD1 SOHC vtec motors. I'm only making 15 at 2800, and 26 by 3600. Also, with the mbc installed, it was holding 30psi to 7k. That was fun, but scary on stock internals All forged internals doesn't tell much about build. Dedicated N20 engines run unique pistons, ring gaps, and cams with exhaust bias to compensate for the high cylinder pressures. Typical 351W hotrod build, wouldn't push more than 250hp on an N20 kit. Stock block and N20 build.. Could get a fogger system and approach a 500hp boost.

Apr 19, 2009 · The amount of turbos doesn't matter to the engine. I'm not sure what a stock 370 motor can take for boost pressure but chances are that most of the ones you see are twin turbo because of them being a V6. There are single turbo V engines but the packaging can be tricky on those.

There is another popular turbo class called T3/T4. This was designed to fill the gap between 300 and 550HP configuration.
